"Mirror, mirror on the wall, whose the fairest of them all?"

"Not you," whispers the voice in my head as I stared at my reflection.

No lies this morning... freckles still sprawl across wrinkles at the corners of my mouth, eye, and forehead. Black circles form halfmoons under watery eyes. Chapped lips crack at the corners. Thank goodness for makeup!

Like ourselves, each character we create has flaws, too. How much makeup we decide to use to cover these imperfections is up to us, the writer. The more we use, the less our readers will see of the true heroine or hero. The trick is to use just the right amount of base powder or liquid so our characters will seem real. Add mascara sparingly to highlight their eyes, the window to their soul. Use only enough lipstick to color them with qualities we will fall in love with. Give them a consciense by adding a touch of blush.

Put on your professional makeup artist hat today and have fun creating your characters! Happy writing!

I agree!

This is a WONDERFUL way to describe how we paint our characters!

But what about those of us who don't wear makeup?

hhhmmmmm.....

LOL I'm a beauty school dropout. (love that song!) The last time I wore makeup was for my wedding reaffirmation, four and a half years ago! My husband prefers my natural beauty to show through and *I* prefer to not have my sensitive skin clogged with goopy stuff I have to spend extra time putting on an off.

Maybe I need to get more girly girly so I can brush up on my makeup skills. ;)

Love the analogy!

Great analogy. And when the heroine or hero finally risks going 'bare-faced', exposing their inner character, flaws and all, how wonderful when their DH just loves them all the more.

Um, I was once sent home because I didn't look well - which I didn't mind.

I went.

What I didn't tell them is that I'd woken up late and hadn't had time to put on makeup.

But who am I to deny myself a sickie I didn't have to think up an excuse to stay at home :-)

If I don't wear makeup people flee the streets, shops close as I walk by, doors shut and get locked...

And I'd be snapped up to play King Kong on top of the Empire State Building - if I wasn't scared of heights LOL
